I have a insane ability to imagine every conceivable “wrong” that can occur in my life and my blood pressure responds accordingly. This natural hard wiring plus the high pressure of “type A” Northern Virginia and raising four teenagers means I had an intimate relationship with anxiety and sleepless nights. With all the demands that face us, I bet most of you can relate to struggling with stress and trying to calm your mind and relax your body. I was incredibly grateful to discover a healthy, non addictive, anxiety remedy/sleep aid that is all natural and easy to grow/make. Continue reading
Compost is a gardeners’ dream. Black and loamy it sifts gently and easily through the fingers yet with enough time–can turn even the most unworkable soil into perfection. Watching the rock hard clay of Northern Virginia turn into workable soil that breaks apart and allows water to drain makes me break into my “happy dance.” In addition, good compost provides almost every conceivable nutrient/mineral that plants need to thrive; and, that will eventually be transferred to us when they grace our plates. Chemical/artificial fertilizers are often devoid of the trace minerals plants need and do nothing to improve the soil. They are also are derived primarily from nonrenewable sources including fossil fuels which are bad for the planet. This is compounded by the fact that chemical fertilizers tend to “run off” quickly and easily which necessitates multiple applications. Finally, over time these repeat applications can create a buildup of toxic substances in the soil such as arsenic, cadmium, and uranium that get taken into the plants/fruits/vegetables we are growing. I am not a fan of ingesting these substances. Yuck! Especially when there is a natural alternative that strengthens the soil, our plants, and our bodies without poisoning the planet or our health. The simple green avocado. . .it is pretty, but certainly not as glamorous as it’s more “blingy” siblings–such as bright and colorful berries, dragon fruit, or pomegranate. Yet, it nourishes at a cellular level; and, it tastes smooth, refreshing, and delicious on the palate. Avocados differ greatly in size and because of this they differ in exact measurement of “how much per fruit equals x number of whatever vitamin/mineral.” Any fruit will also differ nutritionally dependent on how/when it was harvested; but, you can rest assured that adding a little avocado will give great nutritional benefits in a small package. I was pretty excited today to go into the garden and find a bumper crop of banana peppers. I love their sweet flavor fresh from the plant; but, this many wouldn’t keep long enough for me to eat all of them. Fortunately, I have an old fashioned recipe that blends the fresh banana flavor with some sweet, some tart, and some spicy enhancements that are absolutely delicious on cheeseburgers, pizza, hotdogs, or even sandwiches. After just 10 minutes in boiling hot water this fresh and delicious medley will last in my pantry for at least a year! Less than an hour of work produced 9 pints of garden awesome. Now, all I have to do is pop open a jar the next time I want to elevate ordinary burgers to gourmet heaven–which is something I value now that the crazy school/sports season is here. Continue reading
School starts here on Monday and with it comes cold and flu season. There are many benefits to having a large family with lots of children running around; but, one of the detriments is they come with lots of viruses/bacteria. They also have a wicked ability to spread them faster than I can say “Tylenol.” When cold/flu season hits our home it is a battle to keep these germs from downing each of us one at a time–then repeating. Have you ever had the experience of weeks on end of someone being sick only to start all over again when the last one “recovers?” Yuck! No offense intended to my kids–but as much as I love having them around I was also looking forward to them being back in school. . lol! I am highly motivated to keep them there!! I mean–education is a top priority, right? 🙂 I was thrilled to discover the powerhouse of Echinacea tincture. If used at the very first sniffle, cough, runny nose, or vague feeling of “not feeling quite right” you can often prevent getting sick at all. It is less effective the more symptoms you have before starting; but, even if you use during full blown illness it can help shorten the time you are sick.
So you may be asking, what the heck is a “tincture” anyway? Continue reading
